-February 14, 1984: Marshal of the Soviet Union and Minister of Defense Dmitri Ustinov declares that owing to an emergent crisis within the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, a state of Martial Law is to be implemented. The nature of the emergency, Ustinov explains, involves a conspiracy within the Central Committee of Zionists and ‘‘individuals hostile to the development of Socialism’’, whose aim is the destruction of the Soviet Union by way of secret capitulation to America and its allies.
-October 21, 1984: Grigory Romanov is named General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. The State of Emergency is declared to have abated and Martial Law is formally lifted. General Secretary Romanov however states that the danger of, ‘‘subversion from within’’ remains and that the strategic situation vis a vis the United States and its allies remains, ‘‘white hot due to the warmongering of the capitalist states and the deployment of offensive nuclear weapons platforms in Europe’’.
-May 28, 1987: A Cessna 172 ‘‘Skyhawk’’ piloted by a young West German named Matthias Rust is shot down over Soviet airspace as the small aircraft crossed the coastline of Estonia and established a due course towards Moscow. President Ronald Reagan declares the incident to be an, ‘‘Act of barbarity unparalleled since the destruction of Korean Air Lines flight 007 and the murder of all passengers aboard’’. Bundesrepublik Chancellor Helmut Kohl alleges that Rust was an, ‘‘Ambassador of peace’’ and declares a national day of mourning in the young man’s honor. The Soviet Union issues a formal statement alleging that the purpose of Rust’s flight was to test Soviet air defenses and capabilities therein; noting that Matthias Rust was, ‘‘Considered as expendable as the aircraft that he piloted by the Capitalist states’’.
-January 15, 1989: The Soviet Union threatens military intervention in Poland, pursuant to the Brezhnev Doctrine; alleging that the Solidarity labor union led by Lech Walesa is in fact a ‘‘Fascist’’ insurrectionist element, funded and facilitated by the Roman Catholic Church and elements of the United States intelligence apparatus. Grigory Romanov points to the arrest of a cadre of Yugoslav Army officers (all ethnically Croatian, all having allegedly sworn allegiance to the already incarcerated Franjo Tudjman incident to a conspiracy of ‘‘Clerical Fascists’’ to overthrow the government of Yugoslavia by way of a military coup) as evidence of broad front assault on the Socialist Community of Nations by ‘‘reactionary elements’’. The (outgoing) Reagan administration declares that any intervention by Warsaw Pact forces in Poland would be considered an, ‘‘Unprovoked and illegal attack upon a sovereign nation’’ by the Soviet Union. Moscow responds by increasing force levels on the inner German border and, as is noted by the US Navy as well as NORAD, deploying two Typhoon class submarines immediately outside of the contiguous zone abutting American territorial waters off the Atlantic Coast.
-March 27, 1993: President George Herbert Walker Bush declares that the recent passage of a law criminalizing abortion in the Deutsche Demokratische Republik to be an affront to, ‘‘Human rights and the right of women to have agency over decisions involving their own bodily health and integrity’’. President Bush is roundly criticized by his party colleagues as well as the fledging, yet still visible, Christian Coalition PAC. Egon Krenz, General Secretary of the Sozialistische Einheitspartei Deutschland, amidst harsh criticism within the Socialist camp declares that East Germany is enduring a crisis of demographic collapse that is, ‘‘Every bit as critical as a state of war’’ which if not remedied will lead to the, ‘‘Abject inability of [East] Germany to defend itself from attack from without or within’’.
What a cool take. Weird, scary all at once looking at it from 2022
