Striking. I'd be interested in what you made of William Burroughs's book Junky, and his various remarks about opiates. Read it when I was 20 and decided never to go anywhere near drugs. I stopped taking codeine after my fingers were amputated, as I found the pain bearable and actually the drugs did almost nothing anyway. I know my own nature, my tendency to detach from the daylight everyday, to sink into nocturnal clarities and months' long solitude. I could imagine drugs utterly consuming me.
