I am surprised about how little love 'Popcorn' gets from the US horror hound types. Maybe too Giallo for many Americans?

Its just too WEIRD - I believe. And when it DROPPED, audiences were WEARY of horror films. There was real oversaturation by 1989-1990, and people just weren’t into it. Plus the ONLY hype around it was in FANZINES and the like. It had NO star power, no real studio support, no real ad campaign.

Mentioning the great cast of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein without naming the actor who played the creature seems like a slight.

Goes without saying. The entire SELLING POINT of the film was that Robert DeNiro plays the MONSTER.

Frankly, DeNiro was an ODD as Hell choice for the role - he wasn’t terrible, but he wasn’t great either. The STELLAR cast saved the movie from mediocrity that DeNiro pretty much always brings save a half dozen performances in his career.

The man is something of a high functioning moron - and he has ZERO range.
